Sledding

Uncle Matt has joined the fun here and we are taking full advantage of all of the snow that we have here. Today, Mike, Yoni, and Matt went out to the backyard and built their own sledding slope (as the neighbors protested the use of their natural slope..."in case someone gets hurt on our property"...). Everyone had a great time, and here are some videos from today...

This video is from inside. Yoni is watching Mike and Matt from the kitchen window.

Saba and Savta's Visit

We are all having a great time with Saba, Savta, Shanee, and Brandin! Yoni loves the extra attention and is now pooping and peeing in the potty!!! Not perfect, but we're getting there....Savta is using all of her techniques and Saba is helping greatly. For those who are not familiar with my amazing mother, she has a PhD in Special Ed, and professionally potty trains children with autism. So training Yoni is a cinch for her. Thank goodness I'm at work! :) We have been getting tons of snow, but it's been very manageable and really gorgeous outside. We have also started using our wood stove and are absolutely loving it. I think that with one log, we got the house to like 80 degrees....yay...less money on oil!
Here are all the pictures so far from their visit.

Fun Times

Yoni and Sylvie have started playing "together" a little bit finally. They are really starting to enjoy each other and it's so much fun to watch. Here's a sneak peek at them in the kitchen:

Sylvie is 6 Months old!

With all of the stress and excitement of starting work again, I definitely want to give Sylvie her due. She turned 6 months old on Monday!!! I am so proud of my little girl...she weaned from nursing exclusively to taking formula in a bottle in a matter of a few days and has taken to daycare as if it was completely natural for her to be there. She is so sweet, constantly smiling, happy, and very active. She sits with some support and rolls over with ease. She had her check-up today and she weighed in at 15lb 13oz (7.2kg), which is 48 percentile...just right! At the appointment, the nurse walked in and Jonathan promptly told her "Hey Baby!", which is what Mike says when he walks in the door...we all cracked up laughing. Here's the little rollie-pollie in action.

Jonathan is developing quickly too and always comes up with something new. I've been speaking to him only in Hebrew for the past month and he's picked up on the language rather quickly. He'll now speak sentences with both English and Hebrew in the mix, like he'll say, "Bye, bye kelev (dog).", or "Happy Birthday Sameach (Happy)!". He's been saying "Happy Birthday!" every time we light the Hanukiya...I guess it's a candle thing. His new favorite (or at least most used) word is "Lishon" (sleep)...around bedtime, he'll start saying "Lo Lishon! (No sleep!)" over and over again, or "Sylvie Lishon (Sylvie sleep)". Last night, we told him that it was bedtime, and he turned to us and said "Four Minutes!". Mike and I looked at each other and cracked up. Jonathan started laughing too and we said "You need four more minutes?" To which Jonathan replied "Yep, four more minutes!". So, we let him have four more minutes. Wonder where he picked that one up. He's also talking to objects now. Recently, he's been kicking the ball around the house and yelling at it "No!! Not that way! Over here! This way! Faster!". Jonathan also likes to tell us to "open the doors!" and by that he means our legs so that he can crawl through them...nice imaginary play. His Saba and Savta are coming this weekend (my parents) and he's in for an intensive potty training course...we've been preparing him...stay tuned!

Busy Busy....

So I have officially started working this week. My schedule is now Mondays, Thurs afternoons, and Fridays. No more free time for me...I started seeing patients at 8am, took a lunch break (I think I got maybe 5 minutes to eat) and kept seeing patients till 5:30pm, even though my last one was scheduled for 4:30! And then, I picked up both kids from daycare, served dinner, gave them baths, and got them to bed at around 7:30p (usually 7 on normal days). Mike, of course, was 'conveniently' MIA as he was on call (3 more to go!!!!). Then, I stayed up till 11p trying to finish the 'paperwork'. Of course, there is no paperwork, as everything is electronic medical charting (thank goodness they gave me a laptop!), but I think that made it worse. I have to get used to the whole system and get faster, otherwise I'll drown in "paperwork"! Once again, I'm constantly thinking about patients I've seen and if I missed something and if I should call them to see how they are doing, but then I'd really have no more time to myself. And I'm only working half time!!! How do mommies do this full time?! Needless to say, no more time for frequent blog updates (no more time for sleep!), but I'll do my best. Hannukah came and went so fast, I barely noticed the holiday! Luckily, Saba and Savta are joining us this weekend for another Hanukkah celebration, if they ever get their power back after the ice storm, that is...

Happy Birthday to Idan!!!

We had a great time with Amy, Idan, and Hudson this weekend. They paid us a visit to celebrate Idan's birthday and we all had lots of fun. Happy Birthday Idan (AKA...World's Best Uncle)!!!

Hear Ye, Hear Ye!

Let it be known that Dr. Michael E Beckerman, of the Radiology Department at DHMC, has only 5 calls left!!! And here is the world's best daddy feeding his kids some applesauce. Well, technically it was Sylvie's applesauce but Yoni ran to get a spoon of his own.

Apres Thanksgiving

Ok, Ok...so I haven't updated in FOREVER...what, like 5 WHOLE days, as Idan astutely pointed out. But so much has happened since my last update that it's been hard to keep up with. And I have a feeling this will be the trend for the near future. Since Sylvie has rolled over, we had brunch at Liz's house, visited the school-house museum, went to Butterfly World with Grandma and Grandpa, spent the evening at Jen's clubhouse and home, and flew back home. And since we've been home, things have been a little crazy. Sylvie is starting daycare next week with Jonathan (my orientation begins). So, she's been spending some time there to get aquainted, and is actually blending in quite nicely...no stranger anxiety to speak of. The major milestone, though, came today. Since we arrived home yesterday, I have been weaning Sylvie from the breast and today (thanks to super-daddy technique), she finally drank formula for the first time from the bottle! Now, we're really ready for me to go back to work....
Click here for the rest of the pictures that I have from FL.
Here are a bunch of movies from Florida:
This one is from the school-house

The following two are from Butterfly World

And the last video is from Jen's house. Here is Yoni flying Matthew's helicopter.

Thanksgiving 2007

We had a wonderful Thanksgiving this year in Florida and are still enjoying the warm weather. I'm trying not to think about the temps back home while we are down here! And a new milestone has been reached by Sylvie. The day after Thanksgiving, at nearly 5 1/2 months old, precisely at 8am (or around then), Sylvie completely rolled over from her back to her stomach for the first time! Yay!!! Now trying to change her diaper is like a sporting event :) Here are all of the pictures from Thanksgiving and a video taken by Grandma of Jonathan and Grandpa in the pool. Enjoy!

Fun in Florida

We are having a blast here in Florida with Grandma and Grandpa! Sylvie enjoyed her first airplane ride down and Jonathan was great the whole time...singing lots of songs, of course. The weather is perfect...sunny and warm, and I think we even managed to escape before the first snow fall back home. Here are pictures from the airplane ride and Jonathan playing in the mall with Grandma. He loves swimming in their heated pool too...many more pictures to come as Thanksgiving nears. Here's a video of Jonathan yelling "Surprise!" from a giant pineapple.

Baby Aerobics

Sylvie has come a long way in her 5 months of life. She has stopped having freak-out attacks where she screams inconsolably at the top of her lungs for no apparent reason, like she did until about 2 months of age. She is constantly smiling, and even laughing a little. She is starting to assemble quite a variety of dietary options now and she's even loving her green-beans! Looks like we have two good eaters. Unfortunately, Sylvie still wakes to nurse at night...at least twice. And then there are those times where she wakes because she needs her pacifier...so on average, I'm usually up at least 3 times a night. Formula may not be such a bad option...especially once I start to work. Tomorrow, we are packing for Sylvie's first airplane ride and to finally meet all of her cousins over Thanksgiving in FL. Jonathan will have so much fun with all of the other little (and not so little) ones too! In preparation for the trip, Sylvie has been hard at work in order to maintain her girlish figure. Here she is doing one of her favorite activities...baby aerobics.

Hudson

Ok...so I had a really great post about Sylvie ready to go, but I'm having issues loading her video. In the meantime, here's a first video of our new cousin. He's outdoing Sylvie by miles with his new tricks. When I finally get her video loaded, he'll put her to shame!

Train Station

Some people are very fiscally responsible, and others (like us) are more...shall we say...desire driven :) Since I was offered a position at DHMC (yay!!!) we decided to splurge before I even start working there (apparently the credentialing process is one of the world's most complicated procedures). As the details of my job are more clearly defined (by the powers that be) I'll be sure to update, but for now, we celebrated by buying Yoni his Hanukkah gift a bit early (thank goodness there is a valid excuse!)...an amazing train station set! Yoni absolutely loves it, but we didn't anticipate a minor complication. One night, after the kids were in bed already, Mike just wanted to show me a new set-up he came up with for the tracks. Before we knew it, we were both playing with the train set while the kids were sleeping! So typical....hopefully Yoni and Sylvie will enjoy their train set as much as their parents do!

Sylvie

Sylvie's doing a lot of cute things these days. She's definitely found her hands and likes to play with her fingers. She does this especially as she's falling asleep...as if she's scheming tomorrow's adventures. She's also reaching for things that are in front of her now and trying to grab them to put in her mouth. She especially likes to hold on to my chin when she's nursing, which is a pretty funny sight. Sylvie's not rolling over yet, but she's definitely trying...she rolls way over on her side. But the biggest change lately has been in her eating habits. She is so distractible these days and aware of her surroundings! It's so hard to nurse her, because every time she tries to nurse, she gets distracted either by the phone, me talking, or her favorite distraction...Mike and Jonathan. Jonathan has caught on to his mesmerizing power over her and now when I'm trying to nurse her, he'll come right over and start to sing a song and Sylvie will promptly contort her body so that she's just lying there watching him upside down. And she'll stay in that position and simply stare at him until he finishes. And when he's all done, and she's ready to eat again, he'll come up behind her and start singing again at the top of his voice and she'll immediately look at him again!...little rascal. This is why we've had to start solids! I'll try to get Mike to take a picture of her staring at him or Jonathan mid-feed.
Of course, no post is truly complete without a video of my cuties. Jonathan is singing to Sylvie, at the end of which he exclaims "Horray!" and then "I'll show you.", meaning that he wants me to show him the movie playback on the camera.

Puhkin!!!

Since Halloween, Jonathan gets a treat from his pumpkin every night after dinner. When he finishes his meal, he promptly pushes his plate forward and says "Puhkin!!" and points to it, sitting on our counter. Then he proceeds with "Over there!" (still pointing), "Go get it!", "Hee hee hee"...(clapping hands and almost falling out of his seat with pure joy). However, for the last few days, he's been pushing his breakfast and lunch out of the way and declaring "Puh-kin!" in hopes of getting a treat after every meal. Sneaky kid.

5 months old!

Happy Birthday to Sylvie who today is 5 months old!!! We sang 'Happy Birthday' to her this morning, and Jonathan has been telling her 'Happy Birthday' all day long, as evidenced by this video. Too bad that this birthday marks her very first big cold. She's having such a hard time sleeping because she can't breathe through her nose and so she can't suck on her pacifier. And her eyes are tearing, and she is sneezing...hopefully it will pass quickly. She is still so sweet, though, and in good spirits as you can see in the video. In other news, Sylvie has now eaten bananas, apple sauce, squash, and avocado (which she did not care for at all). Green beans are next...stay tuned!

"Me Too!!!"

Mom: "I'm full."
Yoni: "I'm full too!"
Dad: "I'm tired."
Yoni: "I'm tired too!"
then we start having fun...
Mom: "I'm funny."
Yoni: "I'm funny too!"
Dad: "I'm smart."
Yoni: "I'm smart too!"
and we go on and on and laugh and laugh...
And another new one is "Me do it!"
Everything we try to do for Jonathan (cut up his food, get him dressed, brush his teeth, comb his hair, etc) is now promptly followed by "Me do it!" and he is now trying to do everything by himself. Good thing we are not in a hurry most of the time.
Lately, I've been quite busy. You see, I am a 5ft 4in woman. I believe it is considered average height, yet the average pair of pants is for women that must be 6 ft 2 at least. It doesn't matter where I buy the pants, the petite size is for 4 footers and the regular size is for 6 footers....and here I am, 5 ft 4...right in the middle. I've always had this problem and have always dealt with it. But after a recent (rare) shopping trip, I've decided to buy a nice pair of pants and to get them hemmed by a seamstress. Only problem is, there are about 3 in the whole area and they each have a wait of 2 months. So, taking matters into my own hands, we bought a sewing machine, and a few instructional youTube videos later, I find myself hemming my own pants! Ok, so my first pair turned into shorts, and my second pair is still a little too short, but I am getting better. Hopefully this skill will be a handy one around here and maybe I'll even learn to sew more than just hems.

Lawyer in the fam!!!

It is with great honor, pride, adoration, and love that we happily announce that our soon to be sister-in-law, Amy, has officially passed her Bar Exam (though we fully expected it). Mazal Tov!!!

Halloween

Last year, we missed Halloween with Jonathan (oh, to be on a cruise again!), but we more than made up for it this year. First, we got a great package from our cousins Sarah, Aaron, and Daniel full of Halloween goodies to get us in the mood. Then, we started the festivities on the 3oth at Mike's work. He happened to be on call last night (we are now down to the single digits!) and joined us for the fun. Then today, Mike met us at the Bouncy House in the morning for some Halloween celebrations. Here's a video of little Tigger jumping around, and singing as usual (Old McDonald had a Farm).

We all came home and took a nap, and then went Trick-or-Treating at our local mall. When we got home, we took a picture of Jonathan's loot. All in all, he and Sylvie got to wear their costumes 3 times...not bad at all! Click here for all of the pictures. Here's the little guy getting some candy in the mall.

Coming soon to a holiday card near you.

"Put it There!"

Approx 5:30pm on any given night:

Mom: "Jonathan, would you like some chicken?"

J: "Put it there!" (and points right down to the exact spot on the plate that he wants his chicken to be placed)

Dad: "Yoni, would you like some rice?"

J: "Put it there!" (again, pointing to the exact location the rice should go).

Mom: "Yoni, would you like some asparagus?"

J: "Put it there! Right there!!!" (as I try to delicately roll the asparagus onto the plate so that they will reach their final destination with utmost accuracy)

J: "Noooo!!! No there! Put it THERE!" (showing me the error of my way)

[playing a game of "Shuffle the Asparagus"]
Mom: "Here you go...is this better?"

J: "Yup. Want sauce. right there!"

And so, ladies and gentlemen, here is the perfectly balanced plate with all the food items exactly where they should be:

Sylvie's Room

For our family and friends that haven't been able to come visit (yet!), I'm posting pics of Sylvie's room so that you can ooh-and-ahh about how cute it is (and for some of you, to see the return on your investment :) Thank you again...

My little girl's all grown up!

Today, at 4 1/2 months of age, Sylvie for the first time in her life had something else to eat besides breast milk. And we had the camera ready to go, of course! Sylvie did not seem so excited about the change in her regular diet, but Mike and Jonathan tasted her cereal and they agreed with her that it is pretty yucky.

and the fun continues...

B-I-N-G-O!!!

And the singing continues....I think everyone knows this song..."B-I-N-B-O" is Jonathan's version...The sticker on his back is of a pumpkin sent by his cousins in Florida.

Down By The Bay

One day, Jonathan came home from daycare singing a song that Mike and I had never heard of...He kept singing it and singing it, and finally we looked for it online (just to get an idea of what it's actually supposed to sound like) and we've been singing it ever since, making up our own rhymes. Here is Jonathan's version...getting stuck on "Have you ever seen a whale with a polka-dotted tail?" (of which you only hear "polka-dotted tail").

Frustration

Lately, it's been very easy to tell when Sylvie is frustrated, tired or otherwise unhappy. She continuously blows raspberries...and here's a video to prove it...

Leaves

We have been enjoying the warm weather and have been spending lots of time outside. Jonathan has discovered all of the leaves in the yard and has a lot of fun playing in them. Please click here for all of the pictures and enjoy the video of Yoni playing in the leaves.

Gorgeous Weekend

We had a beautiful weekend here with temps in the 70's and sunny. Idan and Amy came to visit and we all had a great time. Today was so beautiful that we spent the morning in the garden planting tulips for next spring. We can't wait to meet Idan and Amy's new addition...a little puppy named Hudson....congratulations!
Jonathan has been obsessed with the moon for a little while now. When Grandma and Grandpa were here, they even bought him a couple of moon-themed books. He asks to see the moon every night before he goes to sleep, but last week was cloudy. Finally, the sky cleared enough for us to see that there is no way to see the moon from our windows because we are surrounded by trees. So, yesterday Idan and Mike stuck lots of glow in the dark stars and planets to Yoni's ceiling. And last night, Mike took Yoni out in his PJ's to see the moon from our street. I think that the presence of the stars, though, has been distracting for him...he keeps pointing to them instead of going to sleep! Please click here for all of the pictures from this weekend.
Here's a video of Sylvie enjoying her bouncy swing.

Grandma and Grandpa's Visit

We had a blast with Grandma and Grandpa and we already miss them dearly. We were so spoiled by them and Jonathan and Sylvie soaked up all of the extra attention. Speaking of attention, when Jonathan needs extra attention, I tell him "Say 'I need attention!'" instead of making noise and whining. So, today I was playing with Sylvie and Jonathan came into the room and said "I need attention!". It was very cute...I put Sylvie down and gave him a big hug. What a big boy. We had lots of fun with Grandma and Grandpa and here are the rest of the pictures from their visit. We can't wait to see them again over Thanksgiving.

Sylvie is 4 months old!!!

With all of the excitement around here, I almost forgot a noteworthy milestone...Sylvie turned 4 months old on the 10th...2 days ago! We took her to the pediatrician who of course, rewarded her with more immunizations. This time, however, Sylvie took them like a champ and had no fever or any other symptoms. Here are her current stats: weight - 6kg/13.2 lbs (42%), length - 61cm/24in (42%). I am oh so proud.

On a sad note...

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Bittermans during this difficult and sad time. We really enjoyed spending time with Grandpa Bernie during our weekends in Maine and will miss him.

Conductor?

Jonathan has found a new talent....he now grabs his tools and conducts with them as his piano plays the songs. We have finally consolidated all of the pictures from grandma and grandpa's camera and our camera and you can click here to see them all. There are lots of pictures, and we still have the beginning of next week with them! We are all having a blast together and don't even want to think about them leaving.
Here's a video of the conductor in action playing with daddy in a video taken by Grandma.

Grandma and Sylvie

Grandma and Grandpa have arrived on Saturday and we are having a great time with them. Here is a cute video of Sylvie and Grandma having a conversation. There will be many pictures to follow...

HEEELA!!!!

So, apparently Jonathan figured out that my name is Hila, though Mike is still Dadda. So now, every once in awhile, particularly when I'm busy and not paying enough attention to him, he'll yell at me "HEEEELA!!!" to get my attention. Here's a little video of him in action.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm on a video roll with him because he's so entertaining. Here he is singing the ABC's to Sylvie. He stops to say "More!" and then continues...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Even though it's October, the weather has been absolutely gorgeous and summery...highs in the upper 70's (around 28C for those in Israel). So the kids and I had a little picnic outside this afternoon. Here are a couple of videos of them outside in our yard. I like to call this one "crash landing"...

In this one, Jonathan starts to sing a song in hebrew and then gets distracted when he finds Sylvie's drool puddle...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And during dinner, Mike looked out of the window of our dining room and saw a beautiful deer. Of course it ran away as soon as he and Jonathan went outside to greet it, but then we also saw a bunch of turkeys! I'm not sure it will ever get boring for us to see all of this wildlife right outside our house. Please click here for all of the pictures.
I love my kids
I know every mom thinks knows that her kids are the best...but my kids are just so sweet....so good natured. Sylvie's face lights up and has a huge smile when she sees any of us...or anyone for that matter. She is just so sweet...and she loves to talk! Currently, she's working on rolling over and laughing. Yoni is such a good boy. Of course he has his moments, but in general, he is just so good. We'll put him in bed and an hour later, one of us will cough, and he'll get out of bed and run to the gate and yell "Bess you mommy, Bess you daddy!!". Just so cute. Now, when you try to sing a song with him, he says "Stop! No sing mommy, no sing daddy. Yoni sing". When you ask him if he wants a cookie, he'll say "two". This weekend we did some shopping and got Sylvie's room all set up. It is so adorable...I'll take some pics of it later this week.
Click here for our latest pictures.
I couldn't sign off without another cute video of Sylvie talking.
Dear Tony Romo, the jig is up.
Dear Tony Romo,
The jig is up. I know about the affair that you've been having with my husband and I'm writing you for it to stop. I always thought it was going to be with another woman, not a man! You see, I've been suspecting this for quite a while now (since the beginning of the month) but my suspicions have finally been confirmed. I know that you can't hear through the television...at least I thought you couldn't...but it seems that as my husband shouts at you while you are playing on TV, you seem to hear him because it is followed by cheers so loud that I'm sure the neighbors can hear, as well. Furthermore, he is part of this "fantasy" club in which he actually employs you. He wasn't planning on employing you at first, as there were other employees he picked before you, but as it happens, you are on his payroll. So, another point to mention is that an affair with your boss must be against company policy! However, you apparently are his favorite employee because every week his company beats all the others....and then he thanks you. I didn't know you could hear him through the computer, as well. You see...my husband is generally not a multi-tasker, like most men. He can barely hold the baby while watching TV. But, when you are on, he manages to hold the baby, continuously check stats on the computer, shout at the television, cook, clean, fold laundry, and super-glue broken toys all at the same time. What do you have that I don't? Not to mention that he talks about you and his club throughout the day and night. He woke me up one night saying "Should I take 2 RB's, or 2 Receivers?". To which I replied, "what?!". The only time that we have together is on the weekends, but this weekend, we've had to cram all of our plans into one Saturday so that he can be free for you on Sunday afternoon...right in the middle of the day. And don't you know, he also has to prepare to watch you before-hand...it's apparently a lot of work to run this fantasy company of his. This Sunday has officially been declared in this household as Tony Romo day. How come I never get a day? I'm begging you to end this affair as I'm afraid that if it continues any longer, my husband will become too emotionally attached to you and will forsake his family all-together.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Beckerman
Bathing Suit?
Since we are not feeling well, I made my "World Famous (my world)-Better-Than-Penicillin-Chicken Soup". I've added my vague recipe for the soup in the Recipes section. Or you can click here to access it. Funny thing is Jonathan's been walking around the house saying "Bathing Suit, Bathing Suit" around dinner time. And I say "Do you want some Chicken Soup?" To which he replies "Bathing Suit! Bathing Suit!" Took me a couple of nights to figure out that he is mixing up 'Bathing Suit' with 'Chicken Soup'. I finally figured out why he's walking around the house saying "Bathing Suit". And today, he dropped (non-accidentally) his cup of water on the floor during dinner. And I said "Jonathan, why did you do that?" To which he replied (with dad's prompting) "I'm a monkey!" So, I said "You're a monkey?" To which Jonathan quickly affirmed: "Yep!". Funny kid.
Technicality
I am forbidden from using Firefox in our home as Mike is logged in to all of his stuff on it. So, I do our blog on Internet Explorer, which serves me just fine. However, the blog comes out looking a little loopy on Firefox (like pics overlapping, or no slideshows). So if it bothers you...take a look at it on Explorer instead. And I also want to encourage anyone who has a good recipe that they would like to share to either post it as a comment or just email me!
My family (Mike and I) are under the weather now. We got sick over the weekend. I think Jonathan must have brought something home from daycare (he has a runny nose) and, of course, he and Sylvie are doing great and Mike and I can hardly breathe! Which brings me to a funny story (at least it was funny at the time)...Mike strained his back while mowing the lawn on Saturday (not the funny part) so on Sunday while we were eating breakfast, we were lamenting on how crappy we were feeling and Mike shouted up with open arms: "God! Why me, God?! Oh, why me?? My back and my throat?! Why meeee???!" Imagine him saying this with the tormented voice of someone who just got news of a terminal illness. At least there is no shortage of drama in this household! Now we go around the house saying "Why me, God...Why me??!" every time we blow our nose. too funny.
Fall is here!!!
My favorite season is once again upon us! There is no more beautiful place as New England in the fall. I'm sure you'll be seeing lots of pictures of all the gorgeous colors. But for now, we're still in the 70's...sunny and summery outside. These next few months will be fun and exciting: Grandma and Grandpa are coming to visit, I turn 31 (officially in my 30's!), Idan and Amy visit, Sylvie and Jonathan go Trick-or-Treating, then we're taking a trip to FL for Thanksgiving, and finally, Saba and Savta come for a visit... All in the next 3 months! But for now, time to enjoy apple-pies, pumpkin picking, and playing in the leaves.
An aside...some of you have noticed the new "recipes" collection (loosely stated) that Mike and I have created on the right side. We've started collecting recipes on our computer and figured we'd share them as we make them. We can't share most of the dishes, as I just make them up as I go, but we'll share more and more dishes as we write them down. It's a little labor intensive for me at the moment.
Click here for the pics or on the slideshow below.
Weekend with Uncle Matt
Matt drove up from NY last weekend to spend some time with us. He and Mike went to Six-Flags on Saturday and had a good time. The rest of the weekend was dedicated to the kids, video games, and of course, football!
Click here for the pics. Here's another speech by Sylvie.
The Terrible Too's!
I had no idea that when people warned us about the "terrible two's", they should have meant the "terrible too's". Yoni is actually quite well behaved (though has his moments of sitting on the floor crying when he's frustrated), but has been quite uncomfortable for the past month or so. He must be uncomfortable because everything is just "too". If I give him too much food, he says "too much!" When I wash his hands, the water is "too hot!". In the morning (we have already turned the heat on at night), it is just "too cold". When others yell they are "too loud". His car seat is "too tight", and outside it is "too bright". And on and on..."too messy, too dirty, too big, too small...." And some things are just not quite right...but "almost". Daddy "almost done", and he yells "Almost!" if the ball he threw missed it's intended receiver. It's "almost" time to eat, and "almost" time to sleep. Hopefully things will be just right for him soon!
Let the healing begin!
In hopes that Jonathan's forehead wound will begin to heal once he stops picking at it, here's how we've been putting him to bed.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! The good Jews that we are, we decided it would be a superb idea to go to services at the local Temple, which is actually the chapel at Dartmouth. So, we got both kids dressed up and got ourselves dressed up, and we went out to eat in Hanover. Dinner went great (Mike got his usual bacon burger) and we continued on to the chapel. There were surprisingly quite a few people there and Jonathan's mohel led the services. The service started ten minutes late, at 7:10pm, and we were outta there at oh...say...7:15. A whole 5 minutes we lasted. Jonathan even wore his little kipa from the Hazzan family. It was all quiet, except for the mohel, and Jonathan started "talking" in his loud voice. We'll try again next year....maybe.
In other news, Jonathan's hands are now securely in his socks, taped around the wrists. Hopefully his forehead wound will now be able to finally heal! Stay tuned...
Like Mommy or Like Daddy?
Cute Site...
Apparently Jonathan looks more like daddy (though I think more like 30%), and Sylvie looks more like mommy. I guess that's the way it should be :)
Sylvie is 3 months old!!!
Sylvie is 3 months old today! I still can't believe that a person can stay alive (and thrive!) for 3 months off of my boobs. A true miracle! How did we reward the little one? She slept for the first time last night in her own room in the crib! The night before, she slept from 11pm till 7am, so I thought it won't be so bad. But alas...she woke up every 2 hours either for a pacifier, a diaper change, a feeding, or any combination of the three. At one point, I vaguely remember trying to give her the outlet plug that was sitting on her changing table instead of her pacy. Not to mention her explosive poop that nearly catapulted her off of me during a feed which soiled her pj's and required a whole diaper-wipes bath and change in the wee hours. But, we did survive...and how did mommy get rewarded for keeping this little one alive for 3 whole months, you ask? Well...I had a dental hygienist appointment! I called and begged to reschedule as I was half zombified and had no one to watch Sylvie during my appointment. The nice receptionist promptly informed me that I will be charged for the cancellation and that she'd be happy to watch Sylvie for me. Hee hee...I could hear Sylvie crying all the way down the hall as I got my teeth cleaned. Poor lady didn't know what she was in for! Of course, Sylvie fell asleep as soon as my cleaning was over...so I figured I needed a good reward and went shopping! By the way...I was dreading the "do you floss?" question from the hygienist for which I was actually prepared to make a smart response ('funny you should ask - last night my husband made steak for dinner and I flossed some out of my teeth'), but instead, I got "Oh my god..what happened to your thumb?!". No smart response for that one!
Patty Cake
My thumb is healing nicely. My mom-in-law called yesterday with concern, but today it is only bleeding a little...soon the bleeding will stop all together. I really got myself good. On the bright side, you don't really need your left thumb to type...doing the dishes- now that's another story. At least now Jonathan has a boo-boo companion. The scratch on his forehead that he got about a month ago from a book is slowly healing as well. He constantly picks at it, which has prolonged the healing process...but now we are both boo-boo buddies and we'll see who heals first.
Another important milestone has been reached last night. Mike completed his last Friday call. That means that the rest of his calls are on all other days but Friday. Friday's the worst because it really throws the whole weekend off. Saturday calls start at night, so at least he's around for the day. And 13 more calls to go!
Idan (dear brother of mine) has commented that the alert on the right is not so reliable...but I've found that sometimes it ends up in the spam folder...so check there. I'm flattered that someone's even signed up for it!
I had to write a post so that I could put this cute video of Jonathan singing "Patty Cake" with Sylvie's feet. Poor boy got stuck on "Bake me a cake as fast as you can!"...over and over again.
One Thousand Strong!
I only started counting in July, but we've had over 1,000 visitors since then to this website! Now, granted...I check the blog a few times a day to see if it has been updated myself, so the number is probably around only 10 viewers since July. Maybe I'll someday realize that the blog does not get miraculously updated unless I do it! And, of course, my mom and dad check the blog a couple of times a week...so probably, the more accurate count is that of one new viewer since July :)
I have also added a tool on the right that alerts the reader when a new column has been posted....so that after I update the blog, I also get an email that its been updated. hmmm....maybe I need a job!
Yesterday, while making dinner and not paying attention due to rushing, Jonathan "playing" with Sylvie, and being distracted as usual, I happened to have sliced my thumb with a knife. While my thumb was uncontrollably bleeding in the sink, I kept yelling for Jonathan to get me the phone so that I could find out if Mike was on his way or was I going to deal with this alone. So, the cutie pie kept running into the kitchen saying "oh-oh!" and then running back to the living room, and then running back to the kitchen saying "oh-oh!" and then back to the living room...but no phone came. And then in walked Mike to save the day. A lesson learned...Jonathan is good at identifying a crisis. Now my left thumb is bandaged, but thankfully, it has stopped throbbing overnight. Another lesson learned...pay attention when cutting!
Backyard Friends
This morning while Mike was getting ready for work, he saw three deer in our yard. This was the view from our kitchen window.
Tzedakah
"Tzedakah (צדקה) in Judaism, is the Hebrew term most commonly translated as "charity", though it is based on a root meaning "justice" (צדק)."
As a family, it's important to us to contribute in some way to the wellbeing of others (other than our medical profession for which we get paid). There are plenty of good charities out there (mostly medical), but here's another worthy cause which we'd like to share, in case you too were in a giving mood. It's a non-profit organization which allows you to loan $25 to a deserving entrepreneur in a developing country. Click here for their site. You get the money back when they pay it back to you and you can either withdraw it or loan it to someone else!
"More Fries!"
While we went away last weekend, we stopped at McDonald's for a quick lunch. We try to give Jonathan only the chicken and avoid the french fries...but I guess he caught on quickly, because after a few bites he stated "No more chicken. More fries!" We were floored. That's like a complete sentence almost!!!
And yesterday, Sylvie was crying in her swing and Yoni yelled to her "Sevee, no cry! Sevee, no cry!!!". Such a good brother. Here are a couple of photos that a friend took from yesterday's playgroup at the library.
Labor Day Weekend
We had a great long weekend in Ogunquit, Maine courtesy of Amy and Idan. It was nice to see Max and Sarah again and to spend some quality time with Grandpa Bernie. Jonathan also enjoyed playing with Lily, the dog, and meeting Aman and Maryan. We arrived Saturday morning and spent the afternoon at the beach. On Sunday and Monday mornings, we were at the beach and Sunday afternoon, we payed a visit to the Kittery Outlets in Maine. Thankfully, both kids slept through that shopping trip! Please click here for all of the pictures.
Sylvie has become quite a talker and I grabbed the camera as she was giving a speech while sitting on me. She talked so much that she gave herself the hiccups!
Where'd She Go?
I try not to leave Jonathan alone with Sylvie; not necessarily because he's bad, but because he usually tries too hard...either swinging her or hugging her too aggressively. But sometimes, it's just unavoidable...such as when I have to go to the bathroom. Occasionally, I'll bring Sylvie in with me for her safety, but the other day, Yoni was reading quietly and Sylvie was swinging quietly...which is a rarity nowadays. So, I decided to go to the bathroom...a quick 30 seconds away from the two of them. Shortly after I went in, Jonathan comes into the room saying "Where'd she go? Where'd she go?" with the appropriate hand gestures. And I replied..."What do you mean 'where'd she go'? What did you do to Sylvie?" And out of the bathroom I rushed to find Sylvie covered in a blanket on her swing rustling about. Yep...a little game of hide-and-seek. Hopefully, he knows better now.
On a side note, Sylvie sneezed this morning, to which Jonathan promptly replied: "Bess You Seevee!". Very cute.
Aunt Jen's Visit!
Click above for the pictures.
Aunt Jen (Mike's sister) came from Florida this weekend to meet Sylvie, see the new house, and to spend quality time with us. We loved having her here and had a wonderful time with her. Jonathan especially loved all of the extra attention! She arrived Friday afternoon and we had dinner and hung out. On Saturday, we went to Lou's in the morning, and in the afternoon, went to garage sales, visited Quechee and Woodstock, and finally ate dinner at Jesse's. Jen even got a tour of Mike's work before dinner. The weekend was not without its share of drama as we experienced high temperatures and humidity (with no air conditioning!), had a forester trim our tree in the back yard, endured a lightening storm during which we lost power for the night, and Sylvie had her first restaurant meltdown at Jesse's (and my dinner had to be packed). But all in all, we had a great time and appreciate Jen leaving her family for the weekend. Thank you Matt, Sammy, and Mitch!
Yoni-isms (at 25 months)
There are a lot of adorable things that Jonathan has been saying. Every day it seems that he comes up with something new and I'll try to do a better job of writing them down here to preserve them. Today, I was washing his hands in the bathroom when Mike came in from the garage. All of a sudden, Yoni started shouting "Daddy, I love you, Daddy I love you!!!" over and over again. It was so cute!
He's also in a "TADA!!" phase. So that every time he falls and gets up, or we twirl him around, or when he peeks around a corner, he raises his arms and shouts "TADA!!!". And lastly, Jonathan has finally learned to jump with both feet off of the ground! He's been semi-jumping up until now, but today, he actually jumped for the first time. What a big boy!
New House!
Click above for the pics.
We moved into a spacious and lovely house in the beginning of the month. We didn't anticipate all the cleaning we would have to do (the owners had lots of cats) but now we are finally starting to settle in! Sylvie and Jonathan are doing great and Jonathan is definitely enjoying the space and loves to run around. He is now sleeping in a big boy bed but tries to escape his room when possible, so we've gated his doorway. Sylvie has started to express herself and she's becoming cuter by the day. She had her 2 month checkup this week and got her first set of shots which she did not like at all. She weighed in at 5 kg/11 lbs (51%), length of 56.5 cm/22 in (40%), and her head measured at 38.5 cm/15 in (39%). Here is a cute video of her in action.
Bouncy House
For the second time, Jonathan, Sylvie, and I went to the bouncy house that is open here on Thursdays. Jonathan refused to go in it in the beginning, but quickly warmed up to it and now really looks forward to going. We just moved into a house this past weekend (thank you Matt, Mike, and Idan), so it's really nice to get out while the house is so messy and full of boxes. We are slowly unpacking, but we're definitely enjoying the extra space already. Here's a video of Jonathan and Sylvie at the Bouncy House. Click the title above for the rest of the pictures.
It's official!!!
My brother, Idan, has officially proposed to his girlfriend of over 2 years, Amy, last night!!! All of the details are still pending, but the proposal took place in a nice French restaurant on their way up to Maine with a beautiful ring from Nuggets & Carats courtesy of Brian Hassine in Mission Viejo, CA. Amy just finished her Bar Exam yesterday, as well...so congrats again. The wedding is set to take place in Maine in June 2008. The couple has set up their own wedding website and the link is on the right under Mike's Call Countdown, along with my parent's website link. Can't wait to see pics of the ring!
Sylvie is 6 weeks old!
Click on the title above for the latest pictures.
We are so proud of Sylvie and Jonathan. They are both doing very well and continue to surprise us daily with their development. Sylvie is much more alert and awake now, and mostly during the day too! She has also started smiling and has even cood once or twice, which makes waking up at 3am more bareable. She's still nursing well and is getting chubbier. Jonathan has now started to put 3 words together and says "kick the ball" and "one more time". Of course, his favorite expression is "eat food!!!". He's starting to pick up on the alphabet and this cute video shows him singing along to "A says 'a' and 'ahh'!".
Radiology
With all of the exciting events and visitors that we've had lately, I neglected to mention another very important milestone in our lives. Mike has finally entered his LAST YEAR of residency!!! Since he still has a year afterwards to complete his fellowship, it doesn't feel like his last year, but it is his last year of having to stay for overnight calls. And in honor of this final year of calls, I have created a "Call Countdown" which can be found on the right side, under the weather tab. Thankfully, Mike's last call is in February to allow him to maximize his time to study for the Oral Boards (in June). And he is off to his first call (16 more after this one) of his last year tonight.
Jonathan turns 2, and Sylvie is 1 month old!
Jonathan turned 2 this week and Sylvie became one month old. Time is flying and we're enjoying watching them change every day. Sylvie's cheeks are filling out and she's starting to get cute thigh rolls. Jonathan is surprising us daily with new words and he adores his little sister. Jonathan had his 2 year physical and did wonderfully. For his birthday, we had a little celebration at home, and another little party at his daycare. Sylvie is 3 weeks old today!
Please click the title above for the recent pictures.
Sylvie is three weeks old today and she's doing great! Yoni seems to have adjusted very well to her and runs to me with her pacifier when she starts to cry. Her most recent weigh-in was at the pediatrician's office on Monday at which point she weighed 7 lbs, 15 oz, so she's definitely gaining weight. This week ended on a sad note, as Saba and Savta ("Tata") left to go back to Kansas. We all miss them very much, espcially Yoni, who really had a great time with them. He'll probably forget how to insert a filter into the coffee machine by the time he sees them again :)
Sylvie is two weeks old!
Please click on the title above for all the pics.
We had a great time this week with Grandma and Grandpa. Jonathan enjoyed sleeping over at their hotel and playing in their pool. Jonathan seems to be handling Sylvie's presence pretty well and has only smacked her in the head a handful of times. Otherwise, he loves to give her kisses and always wants to know where she is. Sylvie's a good girl and is doing exactly what she's supposed to be doing...eating, pooping, and sleeping. Her next checkup is on Monday, at which point we'll know her weight gain. Sylvie's 2 week birthday, unfortunately, marks the end of Mike's paternity leave and he returns to work on Monday. Fortunately, my parents will still be here this week before I'm left alone with two kids. Jonathan is now singing the alphabet (somewhat understandably) and counts to 3, though his 'one' sounds more like 'nine'. Here's a cute video.
Sylvie is One Week Old...and Father's Day!
Please click on the title above to see all the pictures.
Sylvie is already a week old! She's doing great and we are all enjoying her so much. Grandma and Grandpa arrived on Friday, and Idan and Amy also came to spend the weekend with us and to meet the new addition to the family. The hot air balloon festival was also this weekend, so we all had a great time. The weekend ended with Father's Day and it was so nice to celebrate it with both of our families.
Homecoming
Little Sylvie and I came home yesterday to a great welcoming full of balloons and streamers arranged by Saba, Mike, and Yoni. Yoni has been great with Sylvie, patting her on the head and giving her lots of kisses on the head and feet. He also likes to help her swing in her baby swing by giving it pushes...a little scary, but very cute. He calls her "baby" and "Seeree" (for Sylvie). The newest pics can be accessed by clicking on the title above.
Welcome Sylvie Miriam Beckerman!!!
We've been having a great time with Saba and Savta, who arrived in the beginning of June. Yoni is having a blast and is loving all of the attention. And Saba is graciously waking up with him at 5:30am every morning. And, of course, our special news is that Sylvie has finally joined our family! Though we've been expecting her, she definitely surprised us with her expeditious arrival. Luckily, we were close to the hospital (we were traveling the day before!). I had some mild contractions starting at 10am (which I thought were the result of Mike's breakfast :) which came approximately every 15 minutes or so. They weren't very painful and I vacuumed, washed the kitchen floor, and did a load of laundry. The contractions got stronger at 1pm and my water broke at 2pm. At that point, we went to the hospital (driving through a red light) and right through the emergency room to the triage area of the L&D Ward. We arrived at the hospital at 2:20pm and Sylvie was born (almost in the hallway!) at 2:38pm!!! Mike got to cut the cord which was nice through all of the panic and commotion. The quick delivery is definitely making for an easy recovery so we are all happy. Please click on the title above for all of the pics.
End of May (click for the pics)
We are finally full term with Baby #2!!! The name is still to be decided, but we have some very good options, so I'm sure her name will be as beautiful as she is. I am very excited to finally meet her, but a little weary of the impending labor. My pregnancy has been wonderful, so no complaints there...but I'm starting to get more contractions with each day. My parents are arriving tomorrow (on their motorcycle all the way from Kansas!), which we are very excited about so that someone will be entertaining Jonathan while Mike and I are busy with the new little one. I meet with the midwife again in 2 days (on Tues) and my last day of work is on Wednesday. I'll be sad to stop working, but I'll be happy to be close to home during this final stretch. The people at work threw me an amazing surprise baby shower which was just so touching and so sweet. All of the gifts were really personal (with Mike as an accomplice!) and thoughtful. I will definitely miss it there during my leave.
We are almost done with the preparations for the new baby and you will see in the pictures that Jonathan has been very helpful in setting everything up :)
We loved having Uncles Mike and Matt this weekend and we all went to Billing's Farm to see the sheep shearing and had some maple ice cream.
Here is an adorable video of Mike and Jonathan's rendition of "If You're Happy And You Know It".
Soccer!
(please click on the title "Soccer!" above to see all the pics)
We finished off April with some soccer fun. Mike's indoor soccer league won the championship match last week, and Jonathan got his very first soccer ball to kick around. As the weather's getting nicer, we are enjoying much more time outside together. This will be our last month as a trio, and we are anxiously anticipating the arrival of our new family member. Now if we could only pick a name! Next weekend we are headed for some fun with Idan and Amy in Boston which we are very excited about. Jonathan is growing so quickly...he understands almost everything we ask him and his vocabulary is increasing daily. He loves running to Mike when he arrives from work, he says "bye-bye dadda, bye-bye mamma", and he comes for kisses when he hurts himself. He loves his baths so much that just about after every meal, he says "bath", requesting to be bathed (which we routinely only do after dinner). The newest excitement is all about airplanes...anytime he hears a loud noise, he points to the sky and shouts "aypayne" over and over again until we either find it or the noise goes away. Another cute thing he does is lifting my shirt and pointing to my belly and saying "baby" (accompanied by a kiss), and then he'll do the same to Mike's belly :)
Passover 2007
This year, we celebrated Passover in Florida and had a great time! We were there from Friday night, March 30th to Saturday, April 7th. We also celebrated Grandma and Grandpa's (Lil and Elliot's) 60th Birthday at a great restaurant with just the grown-ups! Jonathan had a great time playing with Grandma and Grandpa and all of his cousins. He loved playing in the pool and had a good time at Chucky Cheese's. The highlight of the trip was spending time with Mike's Grandmother (Nanny), who lives in California and also stayed with us at Lil & Elliot's. She gave Mike and his sister, Liz, a great cooking lesson in middle-eastern cuisine. We will forever be looking for just the right "burgul" :)
Kansas City
March has come to an end with a visit to Kansas City. I took Jonathan down to Kansas City with me so that he could see Savta and Saba, since he's still a free ride. I spent the weekend with Shanee and with my old college friends...after all these years it's amazing how close we are. We met at 3pm on Saturday at our hotel and took a short break from talking around midnight to sleep and then continued! It was also great to see Shanee and I know Yoni had a blast playing with Saba and Savta. Especially since the weather was so nice and warm. Please click on the title (Kansas City) to view all of the pictures.
In The News...
A few months ago, a reporter in the "Upper Valley Parents' Paper" contacted me with some questions regarding being a 'working mom'. I emailed her my answers, and we're in this month's edition! Please click on the picture to see the article. After it loads, you should be able to zoom by clicking on the article. A big thank you to Mike for taking the time to set this all up.
AAAAAAAH!
Today something so exciting happened that I had to write about it right away!!! Exactly 35 minutes ago, Jonathan had his first poopies in the toilet and not in the diaper! It's been a challenge to catch him before he has to go, as his usual strained face usually indicates that he's already in the process. So, this morning, he looked a little strained, and I asked him if he has to do poopies and he said "ya" so I figured he already went, and took him to be changed...but, behold! His diaper was dry! So, I figured maybe he was trying to tell me before-hand, and so I placed him on his potty on our toilet, and told him to make poopies and I heard a "plunk"...I couldn't believe it...I almost started dancing in the bathroom and screaming "AAAAAH!!!" Here is the proud boy in all of his glory!
PS...this miracle has yet to be repeated :)
Updates
Jonathan is growing so quickly! He says "ta ta" just about every time we ask him to repeat a word. For example, when we ask him to say "brownie"...he says "ta ta". We ask him to say "thank you" and he says "ta ta"! It's very funny. He does say "no mow" for 'no more', says "ha" for 'hi',"ba ba" for 'bye-bye', and "ee" for 'eat' when he's hungry. Jonathan has started hitting lately, which he will hopefully outgrow by the time the little baby comes around. Or at least, he'll realize that it's not fun for others. I think he's trying to compete with the older kids at the daycare, and is learning from them. He does say "ta ta" for 'sorry' when we ask him to. :) One of his favorite passtimes is playing his guitar while daddy plays his guitar game on the playstation.
We spent a weekend in NY at the end of January. Jonathan stayed at Matt's place and the boys seemed to have had a great time. It was definitely a nice break for mommy!
My belly's getting bigger by the day. I've gained 12 pounds so far and am currently at 22 weeks. At this rate, I'll definitely gain more with this pregnancy than I did with Jonathan! I guess it makes a big difference not living by myself in New York. I still love working my 2 days a week in private practice...what a difference from being pregnant in residency! Of course Mike is doing great at work, and has even been interviewing resident candidates for his program. We have a very busy March coming up and so are trying to take it easy for the rest of this month. Please click on the title ("Updates") for all the pictures!
Jonathan's 18 month check
Jonathan saw his pediatrician today for his 18 month visit. It was a great visit especially because there were no shots involved! She is very happy with his progress but wishes he would completely feed himself.....we're working on it :)
His weight is 11.87kg/~26 lb (54%), Length is 83.8cm/~33in (70%), Head Circumference is 50.2cm/~19.7in (96%!!). We are very proud of his progress and his next visit with the pediatrician will be after his little sister is born!
Baby #2 is a.....GIRL!!!!
We're so excited to officially announce that Baby #2 is a girl! We've had our suspicions for a while now, but as you can see in the ultrasound pics, it's finally confirmed! I've been feeling her kick for a couple of weeks already, but they are getting stronger by the day.
And in other news, Jonathan has started brushing his teeth (all 8 of them!) before he goes to sleep! He loves it and has a lot of fun with the whole routine. He doesn't quite get the whole baby concept but will point to a baby on the TV when asked "where is baby?". But, there's definitely no connection to the one that I'm carrying. It'll be quite a suprise for him!
Hanukkah 2006!
We had a great Hanukkah this year with a full house! Saba and Savta came from Kansas, Idan and Amy from Boston, Matt from New York, and Yaron from Israel! Of course, the main attraction was Jonathan, as he is learning new words every day. He got lots of great gifts for Hanukkah, and his favorites are the legos and his race track with cars. He loves to say "shake shake" when he wants you to come and shake the cars with him (it turns them on). He also loves to say "noooo" while turning his head, and to go to his chair and say "sit" when he's hungry. He's saying "up" to be lifted, points to things and says "dis" for "this", and of course "oh-oh" when he's about to do something he knows is wrong. The newest development is lifting his hands to his face and saying "awdon" when he's all-done! He is becoming more and more entertaining with each day. We are very proud of him because he finally gave up his pacifier a couple of weeks ago. Click the title (Hanukkah 2006!) above to see the whole album.
Here's another classic video...sorry for the shaky camera work.
